Synopsis
Read a review of Platonov! Platonov! Platonov! on nytheatre.com

Anton Chekov's first play is a posthumously adored, unnamed manuscript, popularly known as Platonov. Rife with social and cultural judgments, human degradation, Shakespearian ideals, and commentary on every aspect of natural existence, this is a play never to be recommended to a first time playwright, by a first time playwright. Thus, it was recommended to Eric Michael Kochmer. Loosely adapted from the original and pared down to its primary themes, this frenzied ride culls ecstatic farce from pastoral comedy. Employing Kochmer's text and dozens of outside sources, the ensemble explores Platonov inside and out. Literally.

With Platonov! Platonov! Platonov!, or The Case of a Very Angry Duck, Kochmer has created a world where sex and infamy are the easiest paths to notoriety, and true glory lies in the devaluing of others. In a desperate ploy to expose the gross indolence of society, the local schoolteacher, Mikhail Platonov, destroys himself, stripping his life of all things that his world holds in high esteem: morality, dignity, reputation and right-headed beliefs. The punchline is that the world only loves and respects him more, thrusting him up the social ladder with ill-concealed glee.

Moralists and mallards are the most recognized rapists in their respective societies. To watch one transform into the other leaves us with the question — who is Platonov?
